About

My name is Brendan Murtha, and I am a 13 year 0ld birder and naturalist from Norwalk, CT. I am in the Junior Staff of Earthplace Nature Center, Vice President of the Connecticut Young Birders Club, member of the New York State young Birders Club, and a volunteer at the Bruce Museum seaside center during the summer.

I got into birding at a young age, inspired by my dad, who would always talk of all the warblers and owls he saw in Central Park.  In the past few years I’ve taken birding to a whole new level, and now it is my overall hobby and obsession.  I do most of my birding along the Connecticut coastline, but I also take many trips around the northeast, to Massachusetts or New Jersey. Of course the most rewarding are the far trips, and I do a few a year.

I’m also very interested in all nature in general, and have become a pretty well rounded naturalist – I know my Herps, Insects, and Mammals, as well as most of the LIS marine life.

I like all outdoors sports (hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, kayaking, etc.)  plus writing, reading, and technology.  I also play the drums.

Recently I have also gotten in photography, which should be evident in my posts.

Enjoy my log of natural adventures. Good Birding!

  1. Brendan, what a wonderfully informative blog! I love that you encourage people to get a bird feeder. I agree that we easily forget how interesting the things that are most familiar to us are, and the we need to take a minute to look again. I look forward to reading your entries and continue to be impressed with your interest, excitement and fascination with all things. Bravo! -Michelle

  2. Hey Brendan,
It`s Fabian. We met today at Hammonasset State Park, do you remember?
At the most eastern point, where all the rocks are, we saw a Shorebird we could not identify. That was shortly before I left, the bird that I looked at through your scope. Do you know which one I mean? It had a reddish brown head, and it looks pretty similar to the pictures of a buff-breasted Sandpiper that you have posted some time ago. One or two of those were recently seen at the Park. Do you think it could have been a BB Sand?
Please send me an email (address: fabian.r13@web.de).
Maybe we can go birding together some day if you want!

    -Fabian

    PS: Your blog is awesome!
